What is Road Safety Week?
Road Safety Week is an annual event to raise awareness of the importance of road safety, organised by road safety charity, Brake. The idea of the event, which has been running since 1997, is to encourage schools, businesses and individuals to take part and raise awareness of road safety in their local community.
About Road Safety Week 2019
Road Safety Week 2019 will run from the 18th to the 24th November.
Each year, there is a different theme. The theme for this year’s event is ‘Step up for Safe Streets’. The main focuses being –
The idea of safe journeys is to make changes that will cut down on serious injuries and deaths as a result of human error. This can be accomplished in a number of ways, such as having speed limits that are appropriate for the road conditions and implementing more safety technology in vehicles.
When travelling by foot or bike, it’s important that the conditions are safe and the air is clean. The best way to accomplish this is by encouraging policy-makers to implement more cycle lanes and traffic lights as well as pushing for the increased adoption of low and zero emission vehicles.

How to get involved
There are some great ways you can get involved in Road Safety Week this November. These include –
- Promote the Brake Pledge – The Brake Pledge is something that anyone can take and is a commitment to drive less and when you do drive, to do so more safely. Some of the aspects of the Brake Pledge include never drinking and driving, never using your phone while you’re driving and making sure that everyone in your vehicle is using a seat belt. There are plenty of ways you can promote the Brake Pledge at your school or place of work, such as putting up posters around the building or promoting the link in their email newsletter.
- Organise a fundraising event – Past Road Safety Week’s have seen some great fundraising events, such as fun runs and fancy dress days. There are countless ways you can organise your own fundraising event, whether it’s at your school, work or in your local community.
