About Brake

Cheapfleet.co.uk are proud to support the road safety charity, Brake. Brake work to raise awareness about road safety in order to make communities safer and support the victims of road traffic accidents.

Some of the work that Brake does includes –

  • Providing an expert helpline and supportive literature for victims of bereaved and seriously injured victims of road traffic accidents. Brake supports more than 500 families each year and the police give their literature to families after a road death
  • Encouraging people to make the Brake Pledge in order to improve safety on the roads and cut down the number of accidents.
  • Organising the Giant Walk event for primary schools to celebrate walking and encourage drivers to slow down.
  • Campaigning for road safety policies and spreading awareness of road safety through the media

  • Slow – Speed is a critical factor in all road crashes and casualties: the faster you drive, the less time you have to stop in an emergency, and the harder you hit. Fast traffic often makes people afraid to walk or cycle. Lowering traffic speeds to 20 mph around shops, schools and houses creates a safer road environment, reducing pedestrian and cyclist casualties by around 40%
  • Sober – 13% of all road deaths in Great Britain involve a driver who is over the drink-drive limit.4 For every four deaths where the driver is over the limit, one more death happens where the driver has drunk alcohol but is within the current law.
  • Secure – In a crash at 30mph, a back-seat passenger is thrown forward with a force of 3½ tons – enough to kill the person in front. This is why wearing a seatbelt is vitally important for the safety of everyone in the car.
  • Silent – Drivers talking on phones are four times more likely to crash, whether on a hands-free or hand-held phone. Their crash risk remains higher than normal for up to 10 minutes after the call has ended.
  • Sharp - A quarter of drivers have not had an eye test in two years. This means that there a huge number of drivers on the road who may not be able to see well enough to drive safely.
  • Sustainable – Driving less means less harmful pollution. Going by bus or train produces 6-8 times less CO2 than driving, on average. Walking or cycling produces none.
